If you’re an event planner or the head of a charity or nonprofit, the end of the year is probably a pretty busy time. As the year draws to an end, the push to raise that last bit of funds is a strong one, and it’s why so many organizations plan an end-of-year gala or benefit. Check out our tips for putting together the perfect fundraiser event.
Craft a Cohesive Theme
Any great fundraiser needs an excellent theme to go along with it. You can use your nonprofit’s cause as part of the theme, or go completely rogue. Black tie fundraisers are always great for giving people an excuse to get dolled up, or you can choose a specific color to have people wear. Alternatively, choose a theme based on the menu.
Set Up Fundraising Efforts at the Event
If you charge for admission, that’s already a great way to recoup your expenses and even fundraise on top of what the event costs. But past that, consider hosting a raffle, planning a silent auction, and setting up a table for outright donations‚ these efforts all help your organization draw in more funding for operations.
Don’t Skimp on the Décor and Menu
Fundraisers are for, well, raising funds, but that doesn’t mean it has to be a tight-budget affair. After all, as the old saying goes, You have to spend money to make money. Don’t cut corners on the décor or menu‚ you are honoring your guests and their generosity, and what better way than by being a little generous yourselves?

Plan for elegant linen and detailed tablescapes, a plated dinner with a few different courses, and a special dessert for the event. Consider hosting a Champagne toast, as well. The better time guests have, the more likely they are to contribute to the cause.
Plan Favors and Follow-ups
Finally, make sure that guests have a little something to take home so that they remember how great the event was. Whether it’s a small box of candies, a paperweight, or anything else, any reminder of the organization is good. A week or two after the event, follow up with guests and thank them for coming. This creates a good rapport and lets guests know that you appreciated their presence.
